On Friday, February 6, 1874 (Magh 25, 1280 Bengali, 1795 Saka), at 3:30 P.M., in the home of Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura, Om Vishnupada Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Goswami Thakura appeared from the womb of Bhagavati Devi as an effulgent, golden-skinned child. It was Krishna Pancami of the month of Magh. The Birth place of Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati is situated not far from the Jagannath Temple on the Grand Road in Puri, next to Narayana Chata Matha.

After 1750 A.D., the influence of the movement started by Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu seemed to wane. Many sects of sahajiyas (cheap pseudo-devotees) sprouted up, each claiming to be the true purveyors of Vaishnava-dharma . Because of their bad character, the sahajiyas brought disrepute upon the pure movement of love of God begun by Caitanya Mahaprabhu. But in the 1800′s, Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura apeared to revive this movement and to initiate its expansion beyond the borders of India.

Srila Gaura Kisora Dasa Babaji Maharaja

He was born in the village of Bagjan in the district of Faridpur in East Bengal (now Bangladesh) near a place called Tepakhola on the bank of the river Padma. The names of his parents are not known. But they named him “Vamsidas”. He earned his living as a grain merchant. Although he was married early, probably when he was a teenager (according to the prevailing social custom of the day), he was not attracted to family life and spent most of his time in devotional practices, in an introspective mood of devotion.
